Proper aftercare is essential for maintaining the longevity of your new eyebrows following microblading or semi-permanent makeup procedures. Please review the following brow care guidelines for all types of brow procedures.
Eyebrow Aftercare
It is important to avoid any contact with water, lotion, soap, or makeup on your microblading area for the first 7 days after your procedure.
When washing your face, avoid getting water on the treated area around your eyebrow. When showering, be sure to keep your face away from the shower head, or consider taking a bath instead.
It is common for itching and flaking to occur within the first week after the procedure. It is important to avoid picking or scratching to prevent scabs from coming off too soon, which could lead to uneven results or scarring. Adhering to these after-care instructions has been shown to help alleviate these symptoms.
After 4 days, ensure hands are clean before applying post-care ointment with a cotton swab. Apply twice daily – morning and night – using ointment sparingly to allow skin to heal. Continue application for 7 days.
It is important to avoid the following during the entire 14-day post-procedure period.
- Increased sweating
- Practicing sports
- Swimming
- Options for relaxation include a hot sauna, hot bath, or Jacuzzi.
- Both sun tanning and salon tanning are options for achieving a tan.
- Exposure to UV/UVA rays or chemicals can lead to colour changes and premature fading.
- Avoid using laser or chemical treatments, peelings, or any creams containing Retin-A or Glycolic acid on the treatment area.
- Avoid picking, peeling, or scratching the micro-pigmented area to prevent scarring or pigment removal.
- Tasks involving heavy household cleaning, such as cleaning the garage or basement, may involve exposure to airborne debris.
- Excessive alcohol consumption can slow down the healing process of wounds.
- Driving in open-air vehicles, such as convertibles, boats, bicycles, or motorcycles, offers a different experience.
- Avoid touching the eyebrow area, except when rinsing or applying the post-care cream with a cotton swab.
In case of any unforeseen issues with skin healing, please reach out to your artist promptly for additional guidance.
It is recommended to seek medical attention if any signs or symptoms occur, such as fever, redness, swelling, tenderness at the procedure site, elevated body temperature, red streaks towards the heart, or green/yellow foul-smelling discharge.
What should you expect during and after your brow session?
The healing process for your new eyebrows typically lasts 4-6 weeks, varying based on individual factors such as body regeneration and age. The eyebrows will go through different phases during this healing cycle.
The pigment may appear unnatural after the procedure but darken the following day.
After recovery, brows may appear lighter than before due to natural skin regeneration. This might make it seem like the colour is fading quickly. Some areas may fade more than others, causing the brows to look uneven, even with proper care. This is normal and why most clients require a touchup after 6 weeks.
During the healing process, it is normal for the skin to appear flaky or dry, resembling dandruff. This is just the superficial colour and dry skin naturally shed from your eyebrows. The final result of your procedure will be visible around 30 days later.
It is important to avoid rubbing the treated area as it may interfere with the skin’s natural healing process.
After healing, it is recommended to apply sunscreen SPF 30 to SPF 50 on your eyebrows when in the sun to prevent colour pigment from fading quickly.
When applying foundation, avoid the area of your healed eyebrows to prevent them from looking lighter.
You may now appreciate your newly shaped eyebrows. You are sure to appreciate your refreshed appearance.
Here is an example of how the healing process may look like:
Immediately after the procedure, brows may appear bold with varying degrees of redness, tenderness, and unevenness. It is important to keep them clean and dry and avoid touching them.
- Day 3 – the eyebrows may develop a scab layer. It is important to keep the brows dry and clean during this time.
- Day 4 – the scab on your eyebrows may feel tight and itchy. Apply a small amount of aftercare ointment (Aquaphor) with clean hands and a cotton swab. Make sure to spread a very thin layer of ointment on the treated area every morning and night. Avoid making your brows look greasy or shiny, which means you’ve used too much ointment. Never apply ointment on damp tattoos. Keep applying the ointment until your brows stop scabbing.
- Day 7 – Scabs may peel off during the healing process. It is important not to touch or pick at scabs, as this may cause blemishes or scarring.
- Day 12 – The scabs will stop peeling, and eyebrows may become lighter due to the peeling process. Individual results may vary.
- Day 14 – Eyebrows are no longer sensitive to water. Clients can resume their normal skincare routine. Initially, the eyebrows may appear pale, but the colour gradually becomes brighter as the scabs fall off over the next few weeks.
Day 40 – Eyebrow colour is completely restored, and redness disappears. Enjoy the final results!
